Sunset on the Tatoosh Range as seen from the Mazama Ridge, Rainier NP

Just returned from four days on Rainier. This image shows about as much clouds as I ever saw, and even these had dissipated 30 mins later. Each and every sunrise and sunset was about as bland as can be... relatively speaking, the mountain itself is enough of a sight to make it worthwhile even if it basically sucks photographically. The flowers were extremely late this year, Paradise and Van Trump had some good patches. The lower elevations at Sunrise were plastered, though. Just to rub it in, as I was driving down the mountain this morning clouds started gathering. Gotta work for a living tomorrow, though, maybe next year.

Excellent shot; I find it hard to find anything to criticize!

I just visited Rainier for the first time last week. As you said, there were no clouds whatsoever, but the flowers and the mountain itself were pretty spectacular to a girl from the east. The mosquitoes, however, were not so spectacular. My arms are still covered in bites.

Some of us have a bottle of Deet as a permanent fixture of the backpack. Otherwise you turn into an all-you-can-eat buffet for the skeeters.

thank you kindly for the report! had a chance to read it on my way back from the beach and on my way up to Rainier :) light has been pretty bland and bright all week long. no desirable light during sunset at the beach, wanted to try some star trails..fog rolled in and covered everything :| though did get some nice sunsets do to the olympic mountain fire that i almost became a part of!
anyway..definitely made the best with the light that appeared for you. and as always..great lines leading to your focus. found you some nice "patches" up on the ridge as well..hopefully mosquito free ;)

so did you make it to sunrise? ..the road was closed past backbone ridge today :(

not sure if you'll see this with the plethora of messages you are most likely getting..but congrats as well!

Yeah, I woke up at 3am to drive to Sunrise one morning, the Silver Forrest trail was plastered but sunrise was a bust. I was slightly above the Golden Gate the next morning (beautiful patch of flowers there), and near the bench at Suiskin Falls the final morning (the snow had melted in S curves down the ravine leading to Suiskin Falls). Have images from all 3 locations, not terrible but kind of bland. May post one of them later on, I thought this particular one was nothing special, but it seems to have eye candy appeal :-). For sunsets I was on the Mazama Ridge the first day, went on Pinnacle Saddle the next day only to discover that while the views are breathtaking the photo ops are so-so, and then finally toiled in the meadows near Alta Vista on the final evening, all to no avail. Mosquitoes were not too bad, maybe because I bathed in Deet 5x/day. Next year I will leave the Mrs. home and backpack into Spray Park for a few days for some sunset action. Assuming that next year flower season is at the normal time being up for both sunset and sunrise amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.

sounds like a blast :) Suiskin was gorgeous yesterday..and loud! i didnt make it much past Myrtle Falls since i forgot to re-Deet after the journey to Van Trump and was eaten alive by the skeeters. Will be heading back in a week or two and hopefully the wildflowers will be more plentiful and lighting more dramatic :fingerscrossed:

oo..and a quick thank you for all the help on the filters..picked up my first Lee (.6 hard grad) day before heading up to Rainier..unfortunately didnt have it at the beach :|

Surprisingly, there was not a living soul around despite the fact that the hike to this location is relatively easy. These things are much more beautiful in solitude, one of the reasons I do landscape photography.

I can't even draw stick figures if my life depended on it, but my daughter is great with a pencil, maybe I will ask her to take a crack at it.
